Breastfeeding & Lactation Support in Hampton Roads

Local Parent Resources ยท Chesapeake, Norfolk & Virginia Beach

Quick answer

Help is closer than you think โ€” and much of it is free. Your delivering hospital's lactation consultants, WIC breastfeeding peer counselors, and La Leche League groups all support Hampton Roads families. If you are struggling, reach out early rather than waiting; the first two weeks are when a little expert help makes the biggest difference.

Free & low-cost local support

Private lactation consultants (IBCLCs)

An IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) offers in-depth, one-on-one help โ€” sometimes with home visits. Many accept insurance, and some pediatric and OB practices have one on staff. Ask your provider for a referral, or search the Tidewater lactation community for local consultants.

Getting a breast pump

Most insurance plans โ€” and TRICARE for military families โ€” cover a breast pump at no cost, often before baby even arrives. Call the member number on your card and ask how to order yours, or ask your OB's office to help with the paperwork. Order a few weeks before your due date so it is waiting for you.

When to reach out for help

Feeding questions are medical questions. Your OB, your baby's paediatrician, and a lactation consultant are the right people โ€” reach out sooner rather than later.

๐Ÿ’› We are rooting for you

However you end up feeding your baby, a fed baby and a supported parent is the win. When you are ready to celebrate your little one, we would love to see you in the studio.

Details change. Phone numbers, hours, and programs are set by each organization and update over time โ€” confirm directly. Hello Baby! shares these as a community convenience and is not affiliated with them. Our own services are elective keepsake ultrasound experiences and do not replace medical advice from your obstetric provider or your baby's paediatrician.
