Gestational Age vs. Conception Age: Why Your Pregnancy Is "Two Weeks Ahead"
Quick answer
Pregnancy is counted from the first day of your last menstrual period, not from the day you conceived. Because ovulation usually happens about two weeks after that, your gestational age is roughly two weeks larger than your baby's actual conception age. So when you are told you are 8 weeks pregnant, the baby has existed for about 6 weeks. Nothing is wrong. This is just how the whole system counts.
The simple explanation
Here is the part nobody explains well: on the day your pregnancy "starts" by the calendar, you were not pregnant. You were having a period.
Medicine needed a starting line it could actually observe. Nobody knows the exact hour they ovulated or conceived — but almost everyone can name the first day of their last period. So that day became week 0, day 0. Every pregnancy in the world is measured from a landmark that happens roughly two weeks before the baby exists.
That gives us two different numbers for the same pregnancy:

The two-week walk from ovulation to implantation
It helps to see what is actually happening during those first "pregnant but not pregnant" weeks:

So by the time most people see two pink lines, they are already "4 weeks pregnant" — with an embryo that is about two weeks old. That gap never closes. It follows you all the way to delivery, which is why 40 weeks of pregnancy is really about 38 weeks of baby.
What parents may experience
- "But I know exactly when we conceived." Plenty of families do — especially IVF and tracked-cycle pregnancies. Your provider still converts that date into gestational age, because every chart, growth curve, and screening test in obstetrics is built on the LMP-based scale. If you conceived on a known date, your gestational age is simply that date plus about two weeks.
- Your dates may be adjusted at your first scan. Irregular cycles, late ovulation, breastfeeding, coming off birth control, or bleeding that was mistaken for a period all shift the real timeline. An early ultrasound measurement is more accurate than the calendar, so providers often re-date the pregnancy. Being "moved back" a week usually means you ovulated later than average — not that anything is behind.
- Apps and websites disagree with each other. Some describe development by conception age, some by gestational age, and almost none of them say which. That is the source of an enormous amount of unnecessary worry. Always check which clock a source is using.
- It affects your 3D/4D timing too. When we recommend an appointment window, we are talking in gestational weeks — the same number on your OB paperwork. If you book by conception age, you will arrive two weeks earlier than you meant to, and the images will show it.
- Later scans get less precise, not more. Dating is most accurate in the first trimester. By the third trimester, babies vary so much in size that ultrasound can only estimate within a couple of weeks. This is why the early scan sets the due date and later scans do not usually change it.

- You are unsure of your last period date and have not yet had a dating ultrasound
- Your measured dates and your expected dates differ by more than about a week
- You have irregular cycles, recently stopped hormonal birth control, or conceived while breastfeeding
- You have bleeding, cramping, or any concern about how the pregnancy is progressing
