When Is the Best Time for a 3D/4D Ultrasound?

3D/4D Ultrasound ยท Cornerstone guide ยท Written by the Hello Baby! sonography team

Quick answer

For a single baby, the best time is about 34 to 36 weeks. By then your baby is around 5 to 6 pounds, so the face is full and rounded; most babies have settled head-down into a predictable position; and the placenta has usually travelled higher as the uterus grew, which helps clear the view. You can start getting a good look at the face from about 26 weeks โ€” when baby is roughly 2 pounds โ€” but the features are leaner that early. Expecting twins? Come sooner, around 26 to 30 weeks, before two babies run out of room.

The simple explanation

A 3D image is not a photograph. The machine gathers a stack of standard 2D slices and reconstructs a surface from them โ€” and it builds the most lifelike face when three things line up: your baby has put on fat, is positioned well, and has a clear window of fluid in front of the face. All three tend to be at their best in the mid-30s of weeks.

That is why our favourite window is 34 to 36 weeks โ€” and why, unlike a lot of studios, we are happy to scan you right up to your due date. The face only gets fuller from here.

Weeks What to expect from a 3D/4D session
Before 20 Wonderful for movement, full-body views, and confirming sex from about 15 weeks โ€” but facial detail is minimal. Baby is still very lean.
20โ€“25 Features are forming and images can be sweet, though the face still looks thin. A nice choice for an earlier peek if you plan to come more than once.
26โ€“30 The earliest we can get a genuinely good face โ€” baby is around 2 pounds. Lovely images, just leaner cheeks than later on. This is the sweet spot for twins.
31โ€“33 Filling out nicely. A great time to come, and a solid choice if your schedule will not stretch to the mid-30s.
34โ€“36 โญ Our favourite window. Baby is 5 to 6 pounds with full cheeks, usually head-down, and the placenta has often lifted out of the way. The best odds of the portrait you are picturing.
37+ / up to due date Still beautiful โ€” a full, chubby face. The main variable this late is simply your baby's position on the day, so a little patience helps.
