Anterior Placenta and 3D Ultrasounds: What Parents Should Know

3D/4D Ultrasound ยท Written by the Hello Baby! sonography team

Quick answer

An anterior placenta simply means your placenta attached to the front wall of your uterus, between your baby and your belly. It is a normal, common variation โ€” not a complication. For a 3D session it adds one extra obstacle between the probe and your baby's face, so images can take longer and position matters even more. Beautiful 3D images are absolutely still possible; we just work a little harder for them.

The simple explanation

The placenta implants wherever the embryo settles. Anterior (front), posterior (back), fundal (top), or lateral (side) are all normal locations. Roughly a third to a half of pregnancies have an anterior placenta, which makes it one of the most ordinary findings in obstetric imaging.

It matters for keepsake imaging for one reason: ultrasound builds a 3D surface from whatever the sound beam meets first. An anterior placenta is a thick, dense structure sitting exactly where we want to scan. If your baby's face happens to be turned toward that placenta, the face is effectively behind a wall, and there is no fluid window to render from.

Note what this does not mean. An anterior placenta is not placenta previa โ€” that is a different finding, where the placenta covers the cervix, and it is one your provider will discuss with you directly. Anterior position by itself is not a risk to your pregnancy.

When to contact your healthcare provider

Placenta position is diagnostic information that belongs to your obstetric provider. We can describe what we see during a keepsake session, but we do not assess or interpret placental findings.

๐Ÿ’› Have an anterior placenta? Let's plan around it.

Tell us when you book. Knowing in advance lets us plan your timing and set aside the patience your session may need. Our team scans in the local diagnostic medical community every week โ€” an anterior placenta is familiar territory.

Hello Baby! provides elective keepsake ultrasound experiences. Our services do not replace diagnostic imaging, prenatal care, or medical advice from your obstetric provider.
