How to Prepare for Your 3D/4D Ultrasound Appointment
Quick answer
Drink water steadily for a few days beforehand, eat something light shortly before your appointment, wear two pieces so your belly is easy to reach, and come with a little time to spare. That is genuinely most of it. The single biggest factor in your images is your baby's position โ and the best thing you can do about that is book in the right week and stay relaxed once you are here.
The simple explanation
There is a lot of preparation advice floating around online, and some of it works better than the rest. Here is the honest version from people who scan every week.
What actually helps
- Hydrate over days, not hours. Steady water intake in the days leading up to your appointment is good for you and good for your pregnancy. What it will not do is dramatically change your amniotic fluid volume in a single afternoon โ anyone promising that is overselling it. Drink because it helps you feel well, not because you are trying to buy better pictures.
- Eat something light shortly before. A small snack โ ideally with a bit of natural sugar, like fruit or juice โ often coincides with a more active baby. It is not a magic trick, but a moving baby is a baby who might turn toward the probe.
- Wear two pieces. A loose top and separate pants or a skirt means we expose only your belly. A one-piece dress means changing.
- Be willing to move. Rolling to your side, sitting up, or taking a short walk around the studio is our most reliable tool for a stubborn baby. Wear something you can move in.
- Give the appointment room to breathe. Arrive about five minutes early, and allow a little extra time beyond your appointment slot in case we need a few minutes to coax baby into a good position.

When to contact your healthcare provider
- Before booking, if you have a high-risk pregnancy or your provider has raised concerns
- If you have contractions, leaking fluid, bleeding, or reduced fetal movement โ call them, not us
- If you have gestational diabetes and are unsure about eating before your appointment
- If you have any anatomical or growth question you are hoping an elective scan will answer
Keepsake imaging is meant to sit alongside your prenatal care, never in place of it. Please keep every appointment your provider has scheduled.
